Hi there,
Would you mind clarifying a little confusion about domain ownership? I'm set to purchase a .ca domain name but this ownership issue has got me fretting.
What I learned at school was that there are four names attached to a domain name. I remember them to be "owner", "administrative contact", "technical contact", and "billing contact". I was told that the name attached to "owner" is the most important and that some companies will enter their name as "owner" and your name as the other three contacts, so this is the kind of company we had to stay away from.
Today, I chatted with a representative from Netfirms.ca who answered my question regarding the owner by saying that "Whoever pays for the domain will be the owner." The answer seems kind of vague and sketchy to me. He also stated that they would be the "Technical Contact" instead of me. Is this alright?
When I look up domain names on
www.whois.net, I only see "Registrar", "Registrant", "Administrative" and "Technical".
My understanding is that "Registrar" is the compay through whom you purchase the domain name, such as Netfirms.ca or 10dollars.ca. But how about "Registrant"? Is that what is meant as "Owner"? And will they enter my name and email as the "owner"/"registrant" or will they write theirs?
Can you please clarify this for me???
Thanks!
