How does monetization work?

I have a number of names that I've been sitting on for some time and done nothing with. I've just never pursued it.  Checking out the postings here it looks like parked names could be earning me some $$. How does this work? Is there a simple "how to" for monetizing domain names or  some lessons online I can check out? I do have one .com that's being rented to a third party and I share in the hits but they came to me with the offer.  What can I be doing with my other names?

I just got into this domain name game and could use some tips as well. So far I have a few names that have been parked at Sedo for a couple months and have been real disappointed with the results. I won't be seeing a check from Sedo for at least a year at this rate.

I'm thinking that my names are not the type that will get much traffic through direct navigation and that mini-sites are probably a better way to go. Now all I have to do is find the time and know-how to make a few.
